Chronic Salmonella Infection Contributes to Gallbladder Carcinogenesis

This fascinating study focuses on Salmonella infection and its unexpected connection to gallbladder cancer (GBC). GBC is an aggressive form of gastrointestinal cancer with significant global and India-specific implications.  GBC is known to occur due to certain genetic factors and the prolonged presence of gallstones. However, the precise mechanism of GBC initiation and progression remains unknown. Paradoxically, many regions of the world with a higher incidence of GBC are also endemic for infection by the gastric pathogen, Salmonella.
