Academics

Overview of Academic Programmes

Research-based- learning is the hallmark of the RCB academic program. The design and processes of the education at this Centre is such that it will generate technology savvy solution finders, knowledge economy entrepreneurs, and research and development leaders.

The Centre aims to provide education and training in the biotech sciences at the pre-doctoral, doctoral, and post-doctoral levels. Additionally, domain-specific short-term training programs are also designed for doctoral students of other institutes. Interdisciplinary education and training programs at the Centre will be constantly evolving, and will be a source of new ideas and methods in teaching in biotechnology.

The Centre has an interdisciplinary PhD programme and an integrated MS-PhD programme in Biotechnology that aim to produce a highly specialised cadre of scientists capable of undertaking research and development at the highest level in the area of biotech sciences. Two new PhD programmes have been initiated - GSK-RCB PhD programme in Bioinformatics & Biostatistics, and  i3c BRIC-RCB PhD programme in Biosciences.

i3c BRIC-RCB PhD programme has been initiated in 2024. It is an interdisciplinary Ph.D. programme in biosciences to expand the scale of generating highly skilled, globally competitive human resources. It includes a relevant immersion programme (field internship) for an additional three months immediately following the first semester of coursework. The doctoral research with the respective supervisors in the iBRICs, RCB or ICGEB will follow the coursework and internship.

Postgraduate diploma in Industrial Biotechnology (PGDIB) has been launched in 2025. It is an industry-oriented, 1-year offline program that aims to bridge the gap between academia and industry, offering both theoretical knowledge and practical training to meet industry needs.

A postdoctoral program for the young scientists is also ongoing where talented PhDs get an opportunity to train under the mentorship of RCB faculty.

An important focus of expertise building at RCB is regulation, product development, scale up, manufacturing science and bio-entrepreneurship. The Centre provides opportunities for career development for highly trained scientists and is open to industry for enhancing their skills in specific areas required for career advancement.
